ARCH 480 / RUDOLPH BARTON / URBAN
Site: NW Portland
Type: Urban Corridor
In studio 480 the focus was on the urban scale. Our task was to locate and conceptualize a finger connecting to the Willamette River. I zoomed in on the NW Slabtown neighborhood and came up with a scheme that would reconnect NW Thurman St. back to the river through the freeway overpass that currently impends a connection. The idea is to create a natural rain garden under Interstate 405 that would run down NW Upshur St. and collect in a large bio marsh under the railroad tracks. By the time the water empties into the Willamette, it will be naturally filtered.
